Janak Perfumers’ Fragrance Spreads Globally
Timeless Products Exported to 18 Countries, Says Aalap Dangar
Janak Perfumers, established in 1962, has built a strong legacy over six decades. Its wide range of incense products and fragrances is now available across India and in eighteen countries globally. In an exclusive interview with Sugandh India, Mr. Aalap Dangar, a third-generation member of the family-run business, revealed that their journey began with his grandfather in Porbandar. Starting locally on a small scale, his grandfather traded incense products for several companies. After a few years, he set up their first factory on the lower floor of their home in Porbandar, with the family living on the upper floor. After two decades in Porbandar, the Dangar family relocated operations to Rajkot. They established a dedicated manufacturing unit, marking the start of large-scale production.

Mr. Aalap Dangar shared that after 1980, Janak Perfumers set up a large-scale unit that allowed the company to handle incense manufacturing, fragrance production, raw materials, packaging, and research and development all under one roof. Reflecting on the company’s history, he emphasized their pioneering role in developing masala incense in the Gujarat region. He also highlighted the long-standing success of their flagship products. “One of our heritage products, Janak Flora, has been in the market for 35 years, while 555 (agarbatti brand) has been available for 25 years,” he said. “These classic products continue to be popular due to their consistent quality.”
Janak Perfumers’ Kesar Chandan (saffron sandalwood) is particularly popular in the western states of India, including Maharashtra, which remains a key market. Beyond this, their products have gained significant popularity in West Bengal, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The company offers a diverse product range priced between ₹10 and ₹1000, catering to various customer segments domestically and internationally.
The company has diversified its product portfolio significantly. They now offer over 500 products, including bamboo-less incense, dhoop, cones, roll-ons, attar, fine fragrances, and perfumes. Mr. Aalap Dangar added, “Our end-to-end manufacturing unit is unique. With in-house research and development, blending units, raw material processing units, quality control machines, incense stick rolling, drying, and packaging—all under one premise—we maintain exceptional quality control. This comprehensive setup allows us to stand apart in the market.”
Discussing global exports, Mr. Dangar elaborated on the complexities of catering to international markets. “Each country has a unique fragrance preference,” he explained. “In Africa, people prefer strong fragrances, while in Japan, lighter and more natural scents dominate. In Europe, fine fragrances are the most sought after.” Historically, incense products were popular among NRIs, but today, non-Indian consumers are increasingly embracing incense for uses beyond traditional practices. “People now use incense as a mood freshener, air freshener, or for meditation, appreciating both traditional and modern fragrances from India,” he added.
Mr. Dangar emphasized the vital role of his family in managing the business. “My father oversees the domestic market and stock. My uncle focuses on research and development as well as production. My wife manages the digital sector, and I oversee exports,” he shared.
Reflecting on industry challenges, Mr. Dangar noted a shortage of skilled manpower and rising costs of aroma chemicals and raw materials as key obstacles. However, he remained optimistic, citing their robust infrastructure and operational efficiency as key strengths.
Looking ahead, Janak Perfumers has ambitious plans to expand its reach. The company is researching new fragrances, introducing specialty masala incense, and enhancing its quality further. “We are preparing to open additional depots across India to streamline supply and meet growing demand,” he said.
Mr. Dangar highlighted the evolving nature of the incense industry, noting the constant changes in fragrances and consumer preferences. “While price wars may occur, customers ultimately expect quality. To satisfy them, we must offer the best product,” he explained. He also stressed the importance of maintaining strong relationships in the business. “The trade thrives on relationships. While FMCG plays a role, promoting cash transactions is crucial to avoid credit issues that can strain these bonds,” he added.
As both domestic and export markets continue to boom, Janak Perfumers remains a leader in the fragrance industry. “With a legacy of innovation, originality, and excellence, we are confident that people will continue using incense products in the future. India itself offers a vast and rapidly expanding market for exports,” Mr. Dangar concluded.
